| Pipe Bursting is a pipeline rehabilitation method by which the existing pipeline is utilized to facilitate the installation of a new pipeline. The process begins by pulling a winch-line through the existing pipe and hooking up to a pneumatic hammer on the other side of the section of pipe being burst. Behind the hammer the product pipe, typically HDPE, is attached as well as the air hose for an air compressor. The hammer is then powered with the compressed air and pulled through the pipe with the winch-line attached to the front. The pipe is fractured and pushed out of the way making room for the new pipe being installed.
Pipe bursting is one of the few pipe rehabilitation methods where the result is a new pipe that does not rely upon the original pipe retaining any of its structural characteristics to function properly. In many cases, the pipe can even be upsized from the original pipe size. Also, the amount of excavations required can be very minimal and often the existing manholes can be minimally disturbed and left intact.
