Town of Normal, IL

In the spring of 2003, the Town of Normal began construction on a water main improvement project to improve the quality of water supplied to the residents of Normal, IL.  Originally, 2 HDD installation of 8" Ductile Iron Pipe were planned.  one crossing under a bridge for approximately 300' and another crossing under a pedestrian pathway and through a very narrow right of way between residential properties for about 800'.  Both locations would have been very difficult to complete via conventional trenching.  Upon completion of the two crossings, the General Contractor, Colclasure, Inc. elected to have us attempt HDD installations on some other sections of the project, most notably the areas within the historic district under brick paved streets.  The town required as a condition of the contract that if the brick pavers were to be removed, they would need to be replaced in kind, making restoration a very expensive task.  By installing the ductile iron pipe via HDD and only open cutting at locations for valves, fittings and service connections, the restoration cost for the general contractor was greatly reduced.  Another derived benefit of the HDD installation was the greatly reduced impact on the surrounding community from construction activities that ordinarily would have required many streets to be closed down and rerouted.  Over 4000' of restrained joint ductile iron pipe was dilled and pulled, and none of the drilled sections failed the hydrostatic pressure tests.  For more information on this project, see the Journal AWWA article Ductile Iron Pipe Goes A Different Direction, Is That Normal?

Village of Riverwoods, IL

In the fall of 2001, our crews completed multiple installation of 12" restrained joint ductile iron pipe including, what to the best of our knowledge is a standing record today, 2,160' in one single pull.  The project was initially conceived to bring water to the residents of Riverwoods, IL who were currently on a well system.  The majority of the 4000' of pipe was to be installed along the main 2-lane thoroughfare in town. The right of way was heavily wooded on either side of the road and traffic disruption was a major concern.  Additionally the ground conditions were very sandy with high ground water levels.  A traditional open trench installation of the pipe would have been very time consuming, expensive and disruptive to the community.  HDD was selected as the method of construction and the entire project was completed in just 3 separate installations.  Upon completion of the base contract, the village requested a change order for the installation of another 2500' of 12" ductile iron via HDD in a separate section of town.
